Well, the last vestige of a successful broad-range local bookstore, Hawley-Cooke has been bought by Borders Books and Music. They will close briefly in a couple of months and reopen as Borders. I don’t know how employment will be affected, but I suppose our closest Hawley-Cooke contact Holly will know. Or her legions of HC spies will know.

All employees of Hawley-Cooke were automatically Borders employees as of 8/18. Most people seem ok with it, but there are a few that are upset, understandably. It’s always sad to see a local business fall to the giants of corporate America. However, there is a reason why Borders is at the top of their game. They’re good. Very good. So, if it had to be (and it did), I’m glad it was Borders.
now you might actually have some room for advancement or one of those ever-elusive “raises.”
i know that Hawley-Cooke employees were always some of the lowest paid people in this country.
You would be correct on all points, yes we were the lowest paid, and yes we are getting raises and yes, more oppportunities for advancement. Plus, should I actually leave Louisville (gasp!), it would be easier to just switch stores. :)
