ben wilson This is the blog of a one Ben Wilson, a Louisville, Kentucky native who enjoys baseball, beer, music, bikes, things that fly and good food. By day he pushes pixels and makes the Internet happen for a local advertising agency. His wife, Kelly is an Ironman, and his baby Amelia is the cutest thing ever.

I just read a really good article over at Kuro5hin regarding one’s trip through detox. ‘What drug?’ you ask. It’s not one that many would consider worthy of the gut-wrenching soul-crushing ordeal that we’ve come to see in movie-detoxes.

An interesting perspective on drugs and excess in general. The comments to the story are nearly as good as this little anecdote itself. The “geek” culture isn’t know for it’s heavy use of “normal drugs” (i.e. pot, coke, LSD, etc) — not for drugs not for mind expansion, but drugs to enhance concentration, elongate the short hours of the day, etc.

What makes a “drug”? Well, it’s anything really — sex, toast, coffee, pot — whatever. The outcome is the same. The body, the person, the mind craves whatever it is, even to do the smallest tasks. Bored? Do it. Just ate? Do it. About to eat? Do it. Waking up? Do it. Going to sleep? Do it. Party? Do it. It’s all the same, really. Some drugs are worse than others, for sure, but the mental position is essentially the same.

  1. By this definition your need to post things to the internet all the time qualifies. Just a thought.

  2. though i wouldn’t consider once every 3 days “all the time” (hehe). though this activity is constructive, i think. i’m archiving thoughts, things i’m thinking about here and now. i think that sometime in the far, distant future, i’ll forget about it. and i don’t want to forget.

addiction is a hard thing to put your finger on. though i would assume that if something (action, substance, habit, whatever) interferes with your well-being, mental or physical, you could call that an addiction.

  3. I’ve told you guys that I was addicted to caffine. Stopping cold turkey is really hard. I can drink it occasionally, but if I drink more than 2 caffine-enhanced drinks in one day, I am back on the addiction wagon! I think we all know Chuck is addicted and couldn’t stop if he tried! Caffine isn’t the most serious drug, but there is no question it is addictive and has some serious side effects if you try to quit.

  4. now, i have a cup of coffee every morning, usually, but i can go without it. now, kelly on the other hand, having been weened on BigK, gets a horrible headache when going without caffeine. And believe you me, it’s NOT A PRETTY SIGHT! (Well, Kelly is pretty, but you get the point)
